Biography/origins
Taking Back Sunday formed in November 1999 in Amityville, Long Island, New York, taking their name from a song by fellow Long Island band, The Waiting Process. Friends Eddie Reyes and Jesse Lacey formed the band. Now I don't know this for certain but they might've known each other through (other Long Island musician) Brandon Reilly, who played in The Movielife with Eddie Reyes, but also in The Rookie Lot with Jesse Lacey. After The Rookie Lot broke up and Brand New formed, Brandon and Jesse continued being friends, Brandon being credited as co-writing Brand New's debut album, Your Favorite Weapon.
Originally, Jesse and Eddie were both guitarists, but Jesse moved to bass when John Nolan joined on guitar. John and Jesse had known each other since they were children, attending the same school(s) and being neighbors. The original vocalist was Antonio Longo, and the original drummer was Steven DeJoseph, both other Long Island musicians, (I'm pretty sure) Antonio had also gone to school with Jesse and John, and was friends with the latter.
After the well-known fallout of Jesse and John, Lacey left Taking Back Sunday, forming Brand New a year later. Without a bassist, John Nolan contacted Adam Lazzara, who the band had met when they played a show near Lazzara's hometown in North Carolina. Adam travelled to New York to be in the band.
Steven Dejoseph couldn't tour much due to personal issues, but waited until the band had another drummer before leaving. Mark O'Connell, Eddie Reyes' friend, joined the band to play drums. O'Connell had been playing drums since he was a child.
After the band recorded their self-titled EP, Antonio Longo left the band, later playing in a couple other Long Island groups. In December 2000, Adam became the bands singer. The band members have said multiple times that Lazzara was no good on bass, putting all of his energy into his stage presence and not the actual instrument, so being the vocalist was more fitting for him. Mark O'Connell suggested they bring childhood friend Shaun Cooper in on bass. With this new lineup, the band released a five track demo in February 2001, and began touring.
At this time, they were an unsigned band, but they had offers from a few different labels, but they finally signed when a friend of the band showed their demo to the Victory Records sales and A&R representative, Angel Juarbe. Angel sent the demo to Victory's founder, Tony Brummel, who asked to see them live. Taking Back Sunday signed to Victory Records in December 2001.
